Carlotta James, Co-founder/Project Director, and Gunther Schubert from Monarch Ultra Run Event provided a presentation concerning Monarch Ultra’s efforts to raise awareness of the decline in the monarch butterfly population and the migratory journey they take every year.

 

A video was played highlighting the 2019 Monarch Ultra Run Event that ran across North America ending in Central Mexico.

 

Ms. James discussed slides concerning the following topics:

 

                     A summary of why the population of the monarch butterfly is dropping and the importance of the monarch butterfly as a pollinator;

                     The Monarch Ultra mission;

                     A map illustrating the 47-day running adventure across North America, and the migratory journey of the monarch butterfly;

                     The Peterborough launch in September 2019;

                     A summary of the school presentations, events and council meetings during the journey to promote awareness;

                     A summary and map of the Monarch Ultra Relay Run planned for 2021, starting in Peterborough on September 19 and ending in Barrie on October 9, 2021;

                     Funds raised from the 2021 Monarch Ultra Relay Run will go towards Camp Kawartha.

 

Members of City Council asked a number of questions to the presenter and received responses.
