19-A-132 1  Student/Mayor ItemCOMMENTS FROM OUTGOING STUDENT MAYOR(S) Elijah Wachowiak of St. Monica’s Catholic School commented that the past month will be a time of note in his life experience being at Barrie City Council and having the opportunity to sit next to Mayor Lehman. Elijah thanked everyone involved in the Student Mayor program including his teacher, Ms. Lancaster by providing him the opportunity to learn firsthand about municipal government and the engine that fuels the City. Elijah commented on knowing little about City Council other than it governed our city and its importance, but noted it was much more of a nebulous concept. He provided examples from the Committee/Council meetings that he felt linked municipal government with his daily life such as the absentee landlord situation in the Georgian College area, the history of Barrie the presentation concerning the His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Barrie Painting and the Shift Government Plan tackling urgent social issues. 19-A-134 1  Awards and RecognitionPRESENTATION TO THE RECIPIENTS OF THE ORDER OF THE SPIRIT CATCHER AND YOUTH SPIRIT CATCHER AWARD Mayor Lehman met Deputy Mayor Ward at the podium for the presentation to the recipients of the Order of the Spirit Catcher Awards. Deputy Mayor Ward advised that on behalf of the Order of the Spirit Catcher Committee, it was his great pleasure to officially recognize and present to Barrie City Council, the 2019 Order of the Spirit Catcher Award recipients. Deputy Mayor Ward discussed the number of submissions from the community of Barrie residents who make exceptional contributions. He noted that again this year the contributions of those nominated were inspiring and that the nominations were a reflection of the individuals and groups who work tirelessly to support those in need within our community. Deputy Mayor Ward explained the nomination process and the surprise experienced by the recipients once they are notified about receiving the award. 19-A-136 1  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF THE BARRIE’S RIBBONS OF HOPE DRAGON BOAT TEAM, WINNERS OF THE SPIRIT AWARD AT THE 18TH ANNUAL RACE ON THE RIVER DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL HELD IN NEW GLASGOW, NOVA SCOTIA Mayor Lehman recognized the Barrie’s Ribbons of Hope Dragon Boat Team for winning the Spirit Award at the 18th Annual Race on the River Dragon Boat Festival held in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He called upon Pat McGarry, Team Chairman of the Barrie Ribbons of Hope Dragon Boat Team to the podium for the presentation. Mayor Lehman provided the background of the Barrie’s Ribbons of Hope. He discussed that they are a breast cancer survivor team based in Barrie, Ontario that was founded in 2003 with their objective to inspire and educate others while celebrating survivorship beyond breast cancer, to promote dragon boating as a healthy exercise. Mayor Lehman advised that this year they traveled 1800 kilometres to participate and race with eight other breast cancer survivor teams and several community teams in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He noted that the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. Mayor Lehman introduced former Councillor, Robert Warman to the podium to recognize the recipient. Mr. Warman provided an overview on Mr. Sergeant’s exceptional achievements including his volunteering efforts for a charitable global community named “Sleeping Children Around the World” delivering bedding materials to children in developing world countries, and has made significant contributions to his own community by volunteering at the Veterans’ Club of Barrie, the Canadian Red Cross, the Salvation Army’s Barrie Bayside Mission Centre.
