18-A-082 1  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF SHANNON BONNAR AND DAVID WHITE, THE RECIPIENTS OF THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF CANADA SOVEREIGN’S MEDAL FOR VOLUNTEERS Mayor Lehman recognized Shannon Bonnar and David White for receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. He explained that the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is an award from the General Governor of Canada that recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians in a wide range of fields. Mayor Lehman shared that Ms. Bonnar received the award for her 22 years of volunteering as a Cadet instructor Cadre Officer over five different communities across Ontario. Mayor Lehman advised that Mr. White received his award for more than 10 years of organizing fundraisers to benefit school breakfast programs, preparing food hampers for families in need, as well as arranging transportation for families with children in hospital and for cancer patients travelling to and from medical appointments. 18-A-083 1  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF THE BARRIE BOMBERS LACROSSE NOVICE 1 TEAM ON WINNING THEIR DIVISION AT THE ONTARIO LACROSSE FESTIVAL Mayor Lehman recognized the Barrie Bombers Lacrosse Novice 1 Team for winning their Division at the Ontario Lacrosse 15th Annual Festival. He called upon the Team Coach to join him at the podium to recognize the Team and to provide an overview of their season. Mr. Todd King thanked the Mayor and members of City Council for the recognition of their efforts. He explained that the Team played an outstanding season through hard work and discipline and that he enjoyed coaching this young group of players. Mr. King provided an overview about the Barrie Bombers Minor Lacrosse (BMLA) and commented on the rapid growth in population that the sport of Lacrosse has made over the years. 18-A-084 1  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF THE BARRIE BAYCATS FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN WINNING ITS FIFTH CONSECUTIVE INTERCOUNTY BASEBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Mayor Lehman recognized the Barrie Baycats on their efforts in winning their fifth consecutive Intercounty Barrie League Championship. He called upon Mr. Angus Roy, the Team Manager and a Team Representative to the podium to recognize the Team and to provide an overview of their season. Mr. Dave Mills, President of the Barrie Baycats commented that the Barrie Baycats Team had a good run and that they are ready for next season. Mr. Roy discussed the Team’s season, noting that they had a slow start by their standards and finished the season with 27 and 8. He commented that this Team is a reflection of the Barrie community, a wonderful group of people, with a wide variety of skills working towards a common goal. Mr. Roy thanked members of Council for the recognition and noted that they are very proud to be representatives of the City of Barrie and hope they can do it again next year. 18-A-085 1  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF STEVE GARVIE FOR HIS EFFORTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO KEEPING THE CITY OF BARRIE BEAUTIFUL Mayor Lehman recognized an outstanding individual, Mr. Steve Garvie for his efforts and contributions to the community. Mayor Lehman asked that Councillor Shipley approach the podium for the recognition. Mayor Lehman explained the efforts and dedication that Mr. Garvie contributes to keeping the City of Barrie beautiful. He commented that Mr. Garvie was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) almost 20 years ago, and despite his challenges he has driven his electric scooter through the City, rain or shine to pick up garbage and keep our City clean. Mayor Lehman noted that he has seen Mr. Garvie out on Bayfield Street and how remarkable it is that he is able to do it all from a scooter. Councillor Shipley explained the pleasure of introducing Mr. Garvie, and noted that he has also seen him around the City cleaning up garbage.
