17-A-133 2  Student/Mayor ItemCOMMENTS FROM OUTGOING STUDENT MAYOR(S): Jeff St. Jean of Innisdale Secondary School thanked the Mayor, members of Council and Innisdale Secondary School for allowing him the opportunity to partake in the Student Mayor program. Jeff commented that given other time commitments that November 20, 2017 was his first opportunity to attend a City Council meeting and it was quite an eye-opener. He indicated that he had learned a lot about the community and how the municipality saves money including items such as street sweepings. He expressed his appreciation to members of Council and staff, as he was not aware of how much hard work is involved in municipal government. Julia Vanderhorst of Unity Christian High School thanked the Mayor, members of Council, City staff and Unity Christian High School for the opportunity to take part in the Student Mayor program. Julia commented that she has learned a great deal about the community and some of the problems faced by the municipality. 17-A-136 2  Awards and RecognitionPRESENTATION TO THE RECIPIENTS OF 2017 BARRIE HERITAGE AWARDS Mr. Chris Tribble, Chair of the Heritage Barrie Committee introduced the sixth annual Heritage Barrie Awards. He expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Heritage Barrie Committee to staff in Access Barrie for their assistance in updating the Heritage Walking Tour Booklets. He commented that the Heritage Barrie Committee selected winners from residential, commercial business, institutional and group categories. Mr. Tribble, Acting Mayor A. Khan and members of the Heritage Barrie Committee, Deb Exel, Carolyn Moran, Jennifer Morin, Greg Marek and Councillor, B. 17-A-137 2  Awards and RecognitionRECOGNITION OF THE 2017 SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS KETTLE CAMPAIGN Major Doug Lewis of the Salvation Army, Barrie Bayside Mission thanked members of City Council for the opportunity to address Council concerning the Christmas Kettle Campaign and discuss the services that the Salvation Army provides. Major Lewis thanked the residents of the City of Barrie for their generosity and he extended his appreciation to those who volunteer at the various programs offered by the Salvation Army. He provided details of the Kettle Campaign and he advised that there are 23 kettles throughout the City of Barrie. He highlighted the funds raised in 2016, and those to date in 2017. Major Lewis advised that the projected fundraising goal is $505,000 for the Christmas Kettle Campaign. Major Lewis discussed some of the personal challenges experienced by those who use the Salvation Army Services and the ways that the Salvation Army assists families in need including the Redwood Park Family Transition Project.
