PRESENTATION REGARDING THE ACCESSIBLE GARDEN BEDS AT SHEAR PARK AND FUTURE COMMUNITY GARDENS

N. Wachowiak, Public Health Nurse with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit provided an update regarding the accessible garden beds at Shear Park and future community gardens in the City of Barrie.  Ms. Wachowiak advised that community gardens have already been built in Sunnidale and Golden Meadows Parks.  She noted that garden plots will be rented from the City of Barrie at a cost of $20.00 per year for a single space and $50.00 per year for a double space.

Ms. Wachowiak provided an overview of the accessible garden beds at Shear Park.  She distributed photographs of the accessible, raised garden beds and explained that accessible garden beds are located closest to the water supply and transit/parking points of entry to the parks.

The Committee members provided their feedback regarding wording for the accessibility-related questions on the application form for community garden beds.

Members of the Committee asked a number of questions related to the information provided and received responses from the Ms. Wachowiak and City staff.

Ms. Wachowiak requested to be invited back to an Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting in the Fall of 2019 to provide an update to the Committee on the accessible garden beds at Shear Park and to obtain feedback from the Committee concerning this project.

The Committee discussed potential improvements in the turnaround time for approval of future community garden locations if City staff was to be delegated this authority.
