Title: BANNING OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS WITHIN THE CITY John Thompson, Director of Environmental Services provided an overview on the City's efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics. He advised that staff in the Environmental Services Department are always reviewing and investigating different ways to reduce of the number of plastics. Mr. Thompson noted that banning the use of single-use plastics is legislated at the Provincial level of government. The Committee provided ideas of reducing single-use plastics such as using paper bags as opposed to plastic, the City to show leadership in reducing plastics, or increasing the costs on the use of single use plastics. The Committee discussed the positive impacts Europe has had in reducing single-use plastics and the recent changes of restaurants using stainless steel or paper straws instead of plastic.
