P. Bursztyn, Chair reviewed the history of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and SDS (Safety Data Sheets) with the Committee. He expressed his concerns that under the new GHS (Globally Harmonized System) that the Federal and Provincial Governments are not requiring completion of all parts of Section 2 (Environmental Components) and Section 12 (Ecological Information). P. Bursztyn indicated that while these items are not currently required, he would like the City of Barrie to request that suppliers complete these sections of the SDS.

K. Cooper, Health and Safety Advisor advised that based on current legislation, there is no requirement or ability to mandate the information be included for Health and Safety purposes.

The Committee determined that there should be further discussion with the Purchasing Department and possibly the Environmental Services Department to determine whether it would be possible for the City to require these sections be completed. The Committee requested that representatives from each of these departments be invited to the next meeting.
